Barracuda Project: A New Submarine Fiber Cable Connecting Valencia and Genoa

The Barracuda Project, led by Teset Capital, will involve a €100 million investment and aims to transform Valencia into a key connectivity hub in the Mediterranean region.

Teset Capital has signed a strategic investment agreement with Valencia Digital Port Connect (VDPC) to support the development of the Barracuda Project. This unique initiative combines submarine telecommunications infrastructure with a Cable Landing Station (CLS) and an Edge Data Center.

The total estimated investment for the Barracuda Project is €100 million, with a planned development timeline of three years. Operations are expected to begin in early 2028. The construction of this infrastructure will establish Valencia as a key connectivity hub in the Mediterranean and Iberian regions, playing a critical role in Europe’s low-latency digital corridors.

Technical Aspects of the Barracuda Project

The project includes the deployment of a 1,070 km-long submarine fiber optic cable connecting Valencia to Genoa, providing direct connectivity to other European destinations. The cable will feature 12 fiber pairs, each with a capacity of 32 Tbps. Notably, the system incorporates branching units, allowing future extensions to additional locations.

The infrastructure also includes a high-capacity neutral data center, initially equipped with 1.5 MW of electrical power and a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) below 1.25. Designed to be sustainable and scalable, the facility will feature a 250 kWp solar power plant. The center is expected to meet standards similar to Tier IV certification, the highest classification level in terms of availability and redundancy.

The Valencia installation will be a neutral and open cable landing station, capable of accommodating up to four submarine cable systems. This will facilitate future expansion, further strengthening Valencia’s digital infrastructure and positioning the city as a key connectivity hub in the Western Mediterranean.

The Barracuda Project will also include a terrestrial fiber interconnection network, linking Valencia to Madrid and Lisbon. Additionally, Genoa will be connected to Milan.

Long-Term Vision and Impact

With a 30-year business horizon, the Barracuda Project will generate revenue through long-term contracts, offering connectivity solutions via fiber pair and wavelength sales, as well as data center services.

The potential client base for such a digital infrastructure spans a wide range of industries, including both local and international businesses.

Valencia is set to become a new low-latency connectivity hub, beyond traditional centers like Madrid or Lisbon. This strategic infrastructure will meet the growing demand for high-speed services across the Mediterranean.
